STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The Penn State Nittany survived an attempted comeback attempt by Robert Morris to defeat the Colonials 5-3 at Pegula Ice Arena on Friday, October 2, 2026.

Trailing by a goal, 4-3, with multiple 5-on-3 advantages in the last 3 minutes, the Colonials were unable to find the equalizer. Penn State goaltender Morgan Stickney made several key saves and Abby Stonehouse buried an empty net goal to secure the 5-3 win.

What started out as a strong start by Robert Morris — two early goals in the first by Alaina Giampietro (power play goal) and Rowyn Ringor just over a minute apart — turned into tough sledding. By the end of the first period, the Nittany Lions had tied the game off of goals by Nicole Hall and Sofia Ismael. Penn State led in shots on goal 13-6.

The second period brought more of the Penn State onslaught. Outshooting the Colonials 14-3 in the period, the Lions took their first lead of the game on a goal by Grace Outwater.

Lorelai Nelson added another power play goal midway through the third to extend the Penn State lead to 4-2, and it looked as if Penn State was going to run away with it. The Nittany Lions led in shots after two periods, 27-9.

But never count the Colonials out.

After costly penalties by Kylie Amelkovich (slashing) and Megan Hosman (holding), Robert Morris took advantage of the 5-on-3 to bring the deficit to just one goal, 4-3, off the stick of Giampietro, her second of the game.

And as if to say “We aren’t done yet,” the Colonials had another opportunity for a 5-on-3 when Stonehouse went to the box for Penn State for body checking. But it was not to be had, as Stickney held off the Colonial barrage and Storehouse emerged from the box and put the empty net goal in to seal the deal.

The two teams will face off again on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pegula Ice Arena.
