Duquesne falls to No. 22 John Carroll, 5-2, in CHMA opener

HARMAR Twp., Pa. —Four straight goals, including two straight power play goals in the second period, gave the No. 22 John Carroll Blue Streaks a dominant 5-2 win over the Duquesne Dukes in the CHMA conference opener Friday night at Alpha Ice Complex.
While Duquesne looked to be the dominant team in the first, the score was deadlocked 1-1 after Charlie Tuggey tied the game for the Blue Streaks just 24 seconds after Noah Hritz opened the scoring for Duquesne. It was the second period, however, where John Carroll came alive.
After Dukes’ defenseman Liam Mooney was sent off the ice with a 5-minute major penalty and disqualification for kicking, the Blue Streaks wasted no time taking advantage of the situation.
Zach Zemrac gave John Carroll a 2-1 lead just 15 seconds into the major penalty. Less than a minute later, still with Hritz serving the penalty, Camden Martin made is 3-1 Blue Streaks.
Henry Cseh made it 4-1 Blue Streaks late in the second. Despite the Dukes getting one back with just under two minutes left in the third period from Griffin Lewis, JD Sega notched an empty net goal to secure the 5-2 John Carroll victory.
John Carroll goaltender Austin Muirhead saved 34 of 36 shots for the win, while his Duquesne counterpart Colin Thurnau saved 27 of 31 in the loss.
Duquesne went 0-for-3 on the power play, while John Carroll went 1-for-3.
