HARMAR TWP., Pa. — In a performance that looked more like a highlight reel than a hockey game, the Duquesne Dukes used a Dominic Lombardo hat trick to emphatically defeat the Towson Tigers 10-0 at Alpha Ice Complex Saturday evening.
From the opening puck drop, the Dukes established a relentless pace that Towson simply could not match. Duquesne peppered the Tigers’ net with a staggering 23 shots in the first period alone – en route to a 60+ shot tally for the game – setting a physical and offensive tone that lasted all 60 minutes.
The scoring barrage began at 11:13 of the first period when Dukes forward Alex Goldan found the back of the net. Just four and a half minutes later, forward Dominic Lombardo doubled the Duquesne lead to 2-0 in what would be his first of three goals in the game. Lombardo capped the opening period with his second, a critical 4-on-3 power-play goal, sending the Dukes into the locker room with a commanding 3-0 lead and a shots advantage of 23-8.
The second period started slower for Duquesne, as it looked like the Towson defense had settled down and tightened up. That is, until defenseman Colin Browning and forward Jason Tucker struck in quick succession at 17:53 and 18:30 to make it 5-0.
Forward Max Maddalo – who led Duquesne in points heading into the game with 26 over a 20-game span – added to his point-per-game total with an early goal just 52 seconds into the third period.
Goldman got his second goal of the night just a minute later to push the lead to an insurmountable 7-0.
Defenseman Tristan Lloyd added a goal at 7:02 of the third of a wobbler that just floated its way over Towson netminder Sean Knudtson.
Tucker added his second of the night at 13:18 – a short-handed tally – to kill any hope of a Towson rally, just moments after play resumed from an injured Tiger being helped off the ice. Lombardo completed the hat trick with just two minutes left in the game to cap the scoring and make it a double-digit Dukes lead.
Sensenig Stands Tall
While the offense grabbed the headlines, freshman goaltender Ethan Sensenig was the anchor of the victory, just his second of the season. Despite long stretches of inactivity while his teammates dominated the other end, Sensenig remained perfect, turning aside all 22 shots he faced to secure the shutout. His most critical saves came late in the first period and early in the second period, preserving the clean sheet during a couple Towson power plays.
By the Numbers
The Final Blow: Dominic Lombardo secured the “double-digit” milestone, scoring a hat trick with 2:00 remaining to make it 10-0.
Point Leaders: Max Maddalo continued his point-per-game season with a goal early in the third, while Goldan, Tucker, and Lombardo each finished with multi-goal nights.
Freshman goaltender Ethan Sensenig secured his first shutout of the season, a 22-save goose-egg that had him smiling through the mask by the end of the game.
The win gave the Dukes much-needed momentum, after going 5-5 in their previous 10 games. For the fans at Alpha Ice Complex, it was a night to remember. And for this local photographer back at the glass for the first time in several years, it was an exciting “welcome back” to a world I’ve missed.
